Recently, our company successfully conducted a pilot-scale ethanol and water extraction test for Gynostemma pentaphyllum, aiming to optimize the extraction process, enhance product quality, and provide technical support for the sustainable development of the Gynostemma pentaphyllum industry.
What is Gynostemma pentaphyllum?
Gynostemma pentaphyllum is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb known for its heat-clearing and detoxifying properties. It helps alleviate internal heat, improve cough with phlegm, and assists in lowering blood lipids while boosting immunity. It is commonly used to address symptoms such as physical weakness, fatigue, and chronic cough.
Overview of the Experiment
Gynostemma pentaphyllum, a valued traditional Chinese herb, has garnered significant attention due to its therapeutic effects, including heat-clearing, spleen-invigorating, qi-tonifying, and phlegm-resolving properties. However, efficiently extracting its active compounds while preserving their bioactivity has long been a challenge for researchers. In this experiment, the team employed advanced extraction techniques to successfully isolate high-purity Gypenosides and other bioactive components from Gynostemma pentaphyllum.
During the concentration and drying stages, the team innovatively adopted low-temperature vacuum concentration and drying technology, effectively preventing thermal degradation of the active ingredients and ensuring the stability and potency of the Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract. The experimental results demonstrated that the new process not only significantly increased the yield of active compounds but also markedly improved product quality and consistency.
Process Flow
First Extraction and Concentration
Materials: 25 kg of raw material + 285 kg of water
Process: Extracted at 80°C for 2 hours, followed by concentration.
Second Extraction and Concentration
Materials: 25 kg of raw material + 250 kg of 50% ethanol-water solution
Process: Extracted at 80°C for 2 hours, followed by concentration.
Low-Temperature Vacuum Drying
The concentrated liquids from both extraction processes were combined and further concentrated until the solid content reached 65%, followed by drying to obtain the final Gynostemma pentaphyllum powder.
Significance of the Experiment
Gynostemma pentaphyllum, often referred to as "Southern Ginseng," is highly valued for its rich nutritional profile and numerous health benefits.
The success of this experiment marks a significant advancement in our company's extraction technology for Gynostemma pentaphyllum. By optimizing extraction parameters, we have achieved higher efficiency in isolating its active compounds, laying a solid foundation for future product development and quality control.
Moving forward, this technology holds promise for application in the extraction and processing of other traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, contributing to the modernization and global promotion of traditional Chinese medicine.
